Liberal arts colleges in the United States are undergraduate institutions of higher education in the United States that focus on a liberal arts education. These schools are American institutions of higher education which have traditionally emphasized interactive instruction although research is still a component of these institutions at the undergraduate level. While there is no nationwide legal standard in the United States, the term “university” is primarily used to designate graduate education and research institutions , and is reserved for doctorate-granting institutions, and some US states, such as Massachusetts , will only grant a school “university status” if it offers graduate programs in multiple disciplines. These colleges also encourage a high level of student-teacher interaction at the center of which are classes taught by full-time faculty. They are known for being residential and may have smaller enrollment, class sizes, and student-teacher ratios than universities. Liberal arts colleges are also often associated with larger bodies or consortia.
Background : Demographic research on assortative mating underplays the role of social status in shaping partnering behavior, yet qualitative research suggests social status is critical in shaping partner desirability and structuring opportunities for partners to meet.. Methods : We draw on data from an online survey of sorority women at an elite liberal arts university about their romantic and sexual lives..
Results : While status homophily is the dominant pattern in romantic relationships dating ‘across’ , sorority women up and down the status hierarchy are more likely to hook ‘up’ with high-status fraternity men.

For example, in estimating the effects of liberal arts colleges on intellectual and personal growth during college, the authors were able to take into account where students scored on each outcome measure when they entered college.
Their review of the literature indicates that this report is likely the largest and most comprehensive investigation of the effects of liberal arts colleges and liberal arts education to date. Their study showed that students who attend liberal arts colleges are more likely to encounter good teaching and supportive institutional practices.
Moreover, students who experience this combination of good teaching and institutional conditions, a combination that most liberal arts colleges highlight in their admissions material, show larger “value-added” gains on a variety of outcomes. Contains 6 tables, 5 exhibits, and 6 notes. Jossey Bass.
